Last October, the franchise, which spans multiple manga and anime series, video games, and film adaptations, celebrated its 20th anniversary: the original series, based on the manga written by Masashi Kishimoto, was first aired on October 3, 2002.
Apparently, the creators have understood this as well because they decided to release completely new episodes dedicated to the titular protagonist, Naruto Uzumaki, set in the time of the original series.
